Faerie Photographs

The Cottingsley Pictures

Two little girls, a camera, and some fairies. The world took notice of these photographs because they were publicized by Edward L. Gardner (a folklorist whose writings on the Fairy Beliefs of the British Isles are still used for research...) and Arthur Conan Doyle. Until the late 1980's, both girls maintained that the pictures, taken between 1917 and 1920, were genuine. Even when they recanted, they explained that they had actually seen fairies, and that the pictures were engineered to show basically what they had seen. They never did explain the method by which they faked the photographs. The Cottingsley pictures are not the only fairy pictures of this type known.

Dorothy Inman

This young lady (left) also offered photographs of fairies to the world around the same time as the Cottingsley photographs. Her pictures are assumed to be fake, but she died before revealing her techniques.

More English Faerie Photos

Even as late as the 1960's, people in Cornwall, England, were claiming to have photographed Fairies (right). In the picture the large naked central figure is not a Fairy -- the tiny figures to the left at the foot of the tree are supposed to be the Fairies.

John Stormm's Faeries

I present here a series of three pictures and story sent to me by one of this site's visitors. This is unedited, just as it was sent to me:

"This first GIF, as with all of this set, was taken by my daughter Melanie (then about 14 years old) about 5 years ago on summer solstice, when druidic lore says the door to Gwynydd is easiest opened. I had been studying "rifts" or inter-dimensional doorways or tears in space/time (whatever you care to call them by) and thought maybe a charged quartz sphere (in my hand in these pics) and some good ol' fashioned "chi" from my martial arts training, would open or manifest something in an area where "strange" things are known and likely to happen. My daughter (and the other 3 of my kids) were present to take pictures and notes should anything happen. This first GIF is where I had noticed a strong, but not unpleasant "tingly" sensation and the crystal got noticably warmer and seemed to glow.

This second GIF is where I decided at the rift point, to raise my crystal to catch the sun's rays and focus my "chi" into the rift. In very short order, the whole place lit up like an atom bomb went off, and these tiny things flew in from the opening I had created. They moved VERY fast and it seemed the blue one was chasing a red one. Surprisingly, we were'nt blinded by all that white light. We thought at first we were seeing spots from it, but those spots came and went with a will of thier own for months afterwards... indoors or out.

This final GIF is an enlargement of the blue faery, as seen in the second GIF. Sorry the little fellow is so out of focus, but the camera was an old 35MM Pentax and not autofocused. Melanie would have needed a few seconds to re- focus on the little imp and none of them would hold still for more than a moment, before buzzing off like a firefly on steroids and caffein. It was the best I could do with what I had at the time. The crystal sphere was shattered the following winter solstice when I tried to open a door to a plane called Annwn. The red one showed up alone this time and burned my fingertips. We got no pics because the camera dropped and opened and the whole thing just didn't work out well at all. (from JStormm@juno.com)

(7/99) Less than 50 persons responded when we asked about the believability of this story. Most felt that they couldn't say whether or not it was true. However, more than one professional photographer explained to me how the light effects could have been achieved, one by explaining how that could have been done without altering the film. Another explained how the graphic files could have been altered. You will have to draw your own conclusions.

PookLaRoux's Faerie Pictures

I've been hinting at this for a while now, and I am now pleased to present to you my own exciting finds. I began learning about 35mm conventional film photography in 1996. The pictures shown below were taken with a Minolta 35mm camera and regular film. I used regular commercial processing.

This is a detail from a larger picture. You may recognize this from the intro page to the greater Faerie Shaman site. This image has only been colored to highlight the detail. It has not been altered in any other way. It was taken at Stan Hywet Gardens in Akron, Ohio on Kodak B&W Plus film with a 35mm camera. I snapped a shot of what I thought at the time was a hummingbird. When the photo was developed, I realized that it was not at all a hummingbird. I don't know what it is. But I know what it seems to look like...

This shot below was taken at Virginia Kendall Park in Stow, Ohio. I wasn'r really sure what I was aiming at. I was walking along a path, and something inside told me to turn pause and snap a shot. I did that. When we got the pictures back, I was amazed to look at this shot. It has hundreds of little faces in it! I have sent copies to many people, asking for their opinions. I do not know how well a scan will come out, but take a look for yourself, and tell me what you see.
